Today Monday, June 15, 2020, marks the President’s fixed date for schools to resume for only final year students of universities, colleges, and other tertiary education institutions for them to complete the 2019/2020 academic year and prepare for their exit examinations.
However, other institutions among the Ashesi University have said it would not be necessary for their final year students to return to campus as they have sat for their examination through virtual means.
They will be in school for a six week period with intensive teaching and learning to complete their respective programmes with an attendance of half class sizes.
President Akufo-Addo yesterday Sunday, June 14 in his 11th televised nation’s address insisted that school reopens for final year students today despite the sudden increase in the novel coronavirus cases in the country.
Speaking on measures being put in place to slow the spread of the disease on campus, Akufo-Addo noted that students, lecturers, and non-teaching will be equipped with 3 washable reusable face masks among others to ensure they are safe on campus.
Additionally, 1,700 Veronica buckets, 200,000 litres of hand sanitisers, 3,400 litres of liquid soap, and 900 thermometer guns had been distributed.
The Government of Ghana ahead of the today reopening tasked the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service, to disinfect both public and private institutions.
The government has set up a special logistics team chaired by Senior Minister Yaw Osafo Maafo to supervise the re-opening of the schools and transportation and distribution of the logistics.
“Our intention is to secure the lives of the nearly 200,000 students, lecturers, and non-teaching staff, who will be returning to campus from tomorrow, and I appeal to them also to do their bit to help us succeed,” the Akufo-Addo said.
“I urge them to adhere to enhanced personal hygiene and social distancing protocols, wash their hands with soap under running water, refrain from shaking hands, and wear their masks too, in and from the lecture halls, and on the campus, generally”. he added.
As arranged by the government, final year students of the Senior High schools, with the Second Year Gold Track students; and Junior High finalists would reopen on June 22 and June 29, respectively.
President Nana Akufo-Addo has announced that schools across the country are resuming today, with priority given to final-year students.
The move is part of government’s phased reopening plan to ensure continuity in education while safeguarding the health of students and staff.
Safety protocols, including hygiene measures and social distancing, have been put in place. The President urged all stakeholders to adhere strictly to the guidelines to ensure a safe learning environment.
