The Greater Accra Region was geographically and legally part of the Eastern Region in 1960, when it was known as the Accra Capital District. On the other hand, the minister in charge of local government was in charge of it individually.
Greater Accra was established as a legally independent territory on July 23, 1982, by the Greater Accra Region Law (PNDCL 26), which included the Ada local council area.
According to the provisional results of the 2021 Population and Housing (PHC) census, Greater Accra is now the most populous region in Ghana. It has overtaken the Ashanti Region, which used to have the most people in Ghana.
