The Central University College has been adjudged the winner in the 2020 Commonwealth debate sponsored by the Parliament of the Republic of Ghana.
The debate was organised exclusively for tertiary institutions, bringing together students from various universities to share ideas on a national issue of great importance.
The topic for discussion was, “Ghana Beyond Aid: An attainable feat or a political slogan?” Participants debated passionately, presenting facts, policies and practical examples to support their arguments. The programme created a platform for young people to critically examine Ghana’s development agenda and assess whether the vision of economic independence is realistic.
It also encouraged healthy intellectual engagement, confidence and national consciousness among the students.
Some of the contesting tertiary schools include the University of Ghana, Central University, Methodist University, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Abetifi Presbyterian College of Education and Agogo Presbyterian College of Education.
At the later part of the debate, results and performance proved Central University as the winner, followed by the University of Ghana and KNUST got the 2nd and 3rd positions.
A representative of Central University College, contributing to the motion, argued strongly that the vision of Ghana Beyond Aid is not only realistic but achievable, pointing to concrete steps already taken towards its implementation.
According to him, the Ghana Beyond Aid Charter has gained international recognition, having been adopted by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) as a key policy direction, a move he said speaks volumes about the seriousness of the agenda.
He further noted that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s flagship programmes, including Planting for Food and Jobs and the One District, One Factory initiative, are clear measures designed to drive inclusive growth, boost local production and ensure long-term sustainability of the Ghanaian economy. Meanwhile, he reminded the audience that the 2020 Commonwealth Day was commemorated under the theme, “Delivering a Common Future: Connecting, Innovating and Transforming,” which, he said, aligns perfectly with Ghana’s development vision and commitment to shared prosperity.
