The UmaT Basic School was adjudged the winner of the 5th edition of Western Region Independence Day inter-district quiz competition. UmaT Basic school won last year in the 4th edition and has maintained its position this year.
The Competition took off on Wednesday 4 March 2020 in Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality. A total of eleven basic schools reportedly took part in the annual competition.
The defending champion, UMaT Basic School had a maximum of 82 points, followed by Christ leading International school from Ellembele who lost to UMaT with 77 points. Peace International School from Jomoro was positioned 3rd with a minimum of 76 points respectively.
Each of the representatives of the defending champions took away a trophy, a brand new HP laptop, a canon three-in-one multipurpose printer, medals, textbooks (Maths, Science, English, and ICT), Plagues and certificates.
Whiles Christ Leading International School, the first runner ups took away also a brand new HP laptop, medals, textbooks (Maths, Science, English, and ICT) to participants each, Plagues and certificates.
With 69 points, the S.I.P.L School from the Wassa East District placed 4th position, whiles St Anthony Catholic School from the Effia Kwesimintsim Municipal (EKMA) placing 5th position with 60 points as well as St Augustinus Preparatory from Nzema East Municipal placed 6th position with 58 points all received textbooks (Maths, Science, English, and ICT) to participants each, Plagues and certificates.
The seventh to the eleventh positions all received plaques, certificates, textbooks, student companions and mathematical sets.
Collectively, eleven schools representing their respective MMDAs, namely Ahanta West, two-time champions, Nzema East, maiden champions, Ellembelle, Jomoro, Takoradi Metro, Effia Kwesimintsim Municipal, Shama District, Wassa East District, Mpohor District, Tarkwa Nsuaem and Prestea Huni Valley participated in the competition. The criteria for participation were based on the performance of the 2019 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
The competition put the spotlight on a wide range of subjects carefully selected to reflect Ghana’s rich past, vibrant culture and forward-looking aspirations. Contestants were tested on Ghana’s history, covering the pre-colonial era, the period of colonial administration, and the journey after independence, with emphasis on major milestones, leaders and national struggles that have shaped the country. Questions on chieftaincy and traditional governance also featured prominently, highlighting the importance of customs, stools and skins, and the role of traditional authorities in maintaining social order and cultural identity.
In line with modern trends, participants were examined on information and communication technology (ICT), stressing the need for digital literacy and innovation in today’s fast-changing world. Arts and culture were not left out, as the competition celebrated Ghana’s diverse traditions, music, festivals, languages and creative expressions.
Science and environmental issues formed a key component, encouraging awareness of sustainability, climate change and responsible use of natural resources. Sports and general knowledge rounded off the contest, ensuring a balanced test of intellect, awareness and national consciousness, while promoting unity, confidence and pride in being Ghanaian.
