GIJ appoints new Deputy rector and registrar

The Management of the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ) with an endorsement from the Governing Council has appointed the person of Dr. Eric Opoku Mensah as the new Deputy Rector of the Institute, effective August 2020.

The newly appointed Deputy Rector is a seasoned educationist with over seventeen years of field experience. Dr. Eric Opoku Mensah, in 2003 He joined the University of Cape Coast (UCC), and following outstanding performance he was consequently ranked as a Senior Lecturer for the educational institution.

Until Eric’s appointment, he was the Heads of the Communication Studies Department at the University of Cape Coast (UCC).

Dr. Opoku Mensah obtained a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English in 2003 and also an MPhil in English in 2008, all from the University of Cape Coast (UCC).

He was appointed as National President of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) from September 2017 to October 2019 during which period he led the Association’s drive for better conditions of service.

His research interests are in the areas Political Communication and Media and Communication.

The new Deputy Rector is married to Prof. (Mrs.) Abigail Opoku Mensah and they have four children.

DR. J. SIKA AKOTO

The Institute with the same endorsement has appointed Dr.J. Sika Akoto as the substantive Registrar of the Institute. She assumed office in January 2020 after having served as Deputy Registrar in charge of Academic Affairs.

Dr. Akoto holds a B.A. Degree in Theatre Arts with English from the University of Ghana, Legon. She holds two master’s Degrees; one in International Affairs from the University of Ghana and the other in Human Resource Development from the University of Cape Coast. Between 2008 to 2011, she studied at the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom for a Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Education.

A seasoned university administrator with strong leadership competencies, she has extensive management experience, having risen through the senior administrative ranks to the high office of Registrar. She has held senior management portfolios at the University of Mines and Technology, University of Cape Coast and the Ho Technical University, formerly Ho Polytechnic, in the following areas: Academic Affairs, Public Affairs, Human Resource/Training and Development, International Education, Teaching and Examination, School of Communication Studies, Council Secretariat and Office of the Registrar.

Vacancies for both positions were advertised in the print and electronic media by a Search Committee appointed by the Governing Council of the Institute in accordance with the provisions of the Institute’s Act and Statutes
