Charlie Puth was born Charles Otto Puth Jr on 2 December 1991 in Rumson, New Jersey. He is the elder son of Debra Puth, a music teacher who also wrote commercials for HBO and Charles Puth Sr, a builder and real estate agent.
When Puth was two years old, a nearly fatal dog bite incident left his right eyebrow permanently scarred. At the age of four, his mother started teaching him how to play the piano and exposed him to classical music. He began studying jazz when he was young and joined a summer youth jazz ensemble at the Count Basie Theatre’s Cool School in Red Bank, New Jersey, when he was twelve.
Before earning his diploma from Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School in 2010, he attended Holy Cross School, Rumson, and Forrestdale Middle School. Puth graduated from Berklee College of Music in 2013 with a degree in music engineering and production.

He launched Charlies Vlogs, a comedy channel on YouTube, in September 2009 where he posts acoustic covers and funny videos. The music video for Puth’s debut single, “These Are My Sexy Shades,” was released in 2010.
He won Can You Sing?, a Perez Hilton-sponsored online video contest, in 2011 with a performance of Adele’s “Someone Like You” he shared with Emily Luther. Following their rendition of Adele’s “Someone Like You” in the same year, Ellen DeGeneres declared that she had signed Puth and Luther to her label, eleveneleven.
Early in 2015, Puth joined forces with APG/Atlantic, and his earlier music was taken down from iTunes. Puth debuted with the song “Marvin Gaye” in February 2015, which also features Meghan Trainor, an American singer-songwriter. The song peaked at number 21 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and was certified 2 Platinum in Australia. It also topped the charts in New Zealand, Ireland, and the UK.
Puth debuted “Attention,” the lead song off his second studio album Voicenotes, on April 21, 2017. The track became his highest-charting single as a solo artist on the Billboard Hot 100 chart as of April 2022 when it peaked at number five.
Puth released Charlie’s cover image and release date on July 7th, 2022. The songs “Charlie Be Quiet!” “I Don’t Think That I Like Her” and “Smells Like Me” were all released in September. On October 7, Charlie and the music video for its single “Loser” were both made available. He and Shenseea appeared on Calvin Harris’s single “Obsessed” from Harris’s sixth album, Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 2, on October 21, 2022.
