Charles Matthew Hunnam was born in Newcastle upon Tyne on 10 April 1980, to William Hunnam, and Jane Bell, a ballet dancer and business owner. He relocated to the village of Melmerby, Cumbria, when he was twelve years old after his parents separated.
He engaged in fights with his peers and played rugby football during his adolescence. After that, he made the decision to pursue performing arts at the Cumbria College of Art and Design in Carlisle rather than continue his education at a university. He earned a dual degree in performing arts and cinema theory when he graduated.
