Pine was born on August 26, 1980 in Los Angeles, California to an actor who co-starred on CHiPs as Sergeant Joseph Getraer, Pine Robert, his father and a former actress who became a psychotherapist, Gwynne Gilford, his mother.
Pine completed his secondary school education at the Oakwood School, which he described as “a Jewish liberal school in the Valley,” before earning a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of California, Berkeley in 2002.
He spent a year as an exchange student at the University of Leeds in the UK. Following his graduation from Berkeley, he studied at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco and attended the Williamstown Theatre Festival.
