A newborn baby in Ghana is recorded by the Registrar General’s office. The first official record of a birth is made when the baby receives his/her birth certificate at the hospital or health facility where he/she was delivered. The birth and death of an individual are also recorded and registered with the government through a process known as registration for deaths and birth. An official death certificate is issued to all those who die in Ghana either from natural causes or unnatural causes such as crime, accidents.
In Ghana, birth, and death certificates are not open to the general public. People can request copies of their own birth certificates, but they must provide proof that they are the person listed on the record. The same is true for death certificates. You can request a copy of your own or someone else’s death certificate with proper identification.
