What is a Netball

A ball game called netball is played by two teams of seven players on a rectangular court. The main goal of the game is to shoot a ball that is 680 to 710 millimeters (27 to 28 in) in circumference through the defender’s goal ring, which is 3.05 meters (10.0 ft) high and mounted to a goal post at each end of the court. The other team must also be prevented from shooting through their own goal ring. It belongs to the select group of sports that were designed specifically with female competitors in mind. Played primarily in schools, the sport is played on netball courts that can be found both indoors and outdoors. In Commonwealth countries, netball is the most widely played sport.

History of Netball

The misconception that netball was invented to keep women from playing basketball stems from a prevalent misunderstanding of the sport’s history. However, Clara Gregory Baer, an American sports instructor, misinterpreted the basketball rulebook in 1895, which led to the birth of netball. By 1899, Baer’s improvements had spread widely and had been formally incorporated into the regulations governing women’s basketball.

In 1893, Martina Bergman-sterberg taught basketball to female students at the Physical Training College she ran in England. It was first referred to as “women’s basketball,” but by 1897 it had begun to grow into a clearly different sport thanks to improvements made at Bergman-sterberg’s college and Baer’s rules. Then, in 1901, the initial defined rules of Bergman-sterberg’s new sport, netball, were made public.

International Netball and Women’s Basketball, subsequently known as World Netball, was established as the sport’s international regulatory body in 1960 after the game’s playing regulations had been standardized internationally.

More than 20 million individuals participate in the sport in more than 80 nations, claims World Netball. In world netball, there are more than 70 national teams divided into five geographical areas. Major domestic leagues in the sport include the ANZ Premiership in New Zealand, the Suncorp Super Netball in Australia, and the Netball Superleague in Great Britain. The Commonwealth Games, the World Netball Championships, the Quad Series, and the Fast5 Series are the four major international competitions that take place each year. Netball became a sports association recognized by the International Olympic Committee in 1995, however the Olympics have not featured any competitions in the sport.
