Ghana Navy Uniform

By | March 26, 2022

The Ghana Navy (GN) is the Ghanaian Armed Forces’ naval warfare organizational military arm (GAF). The Ghanaian Navy, together with the Ghanaian Army (GA) and Ghanaian Air Force (GHF), make the Ghanaian Armed Forces (GAF), which are under the supervision of the Ghanaian Ministry of Defence (MoD).

Ghana Navy Uniform history

The Gold Coast Naval Volunteer Force, which was founded during World War II, is the foundation of the Ghana Navy. The colonial British administration established it to undertake shoreline patrols to guarantee that the colony’s coastal waters were free of landmines. After Ghana’s independence from the United Kingdom on March 6, 1957, the country’s military was restructured and enlarged to meet the country’s new challenges. In June 1959, a new volunteer army was formed, with headquarters in Takoradi, Ghana’s Western Region. The men were recruited from the Gold Coast Regiment of Infantry, which already existed. They were commanded by British Royal Navy officers who were on secondment. An Act of Parliament founded the Ghana Navy on July 29, 1959.

The force has two divisions based at Takoradi and Accra respectively.

Uniform Meaning

The current Ghana navy is a development of the British ranks and insignia and it also clear to observe resemblance in the combat uniforms and the colors so it implies Ghana Navy tried to emulate some good characters of the British Navy.

Uniform Types

Officers in both ranks wear either olive green or camouflage uniforms. For ceremonial occasions the uniform is a gaberdine dress uniform worn with a tie. These uniforms predate 4 June 1979, when Flight Lieutenant Jerry Rawlings first assumed power in the country, and have not changed since then.

Naval enlisted men wear their insignia as cap badges except for leading seamen and first and second class petty officers, who wear cap badges and shoulder insignia.  The insignia for Lt. Col. is one pip and a crown, and for Captain, three pips (ibid.).
