Ghana Armed Forces Recruitment

There are two major training schools where all officers in The Ghana Armed Forces get their training namely; the Army Recruit Training Centre and the Ghana Military Academy.

The Ghana Military Academy is an accredited institution that runs military courses and also trains military officers. Established on April 1, 1960, it was institutionalized to break the dependence of Ghana on foreign military academies. The Ghana Military Academy has since then been the training school that commissions officers into the military.

The history of the military academy which is located at Teshie in the Greater Accra region dates back to 1953 when the school grew out of the  Regular Officers  Special Training Schools. The Regular Officers Special Training Schools trained cadets from countries under the then British West African Colonies: namely, Nigeria,  The Gold Coast, The Gambia, and Sierra Leone. Officers who had passed training from these schools were further sent over to the UK to continue special training.

The curriculum of the Ghana Military Academy since its evolution has been revised to allow entry of only first-degree holders of accredited degrees and also runs two courses. These courses are the Regular Career Course (RCC) and the short service Commission/Special Duties Course.

The training of students taking the Regular Career Course(RCC) lasts for  15 months while training for cadets under the Commission/Special Duty course lasts for 6 months. The academy also runs an occasional Special Medical Intake Course to address lapses in the population of the Armed Forces Medical personnel.

The Army Recruit Training School which is located at Kordiabe in the Shai Osudoku district is where members of lower ranks core in The Ghana Armed Forces are trained. The requirement for getting selection into the training school is by holding at least a WASSCE or an SSCCE certificate with 6 six credit passes including core English and core mathematics.
