History

After N. T. Clerk retired from his church post, an educationist from the Presbyterian Church of the Gold Coast, E. A. W. Engmann, continued to campaign and push for the development of a church boys’ school in Odumase.  With the initial group of 16 boys and four teachers, the initiative began in 1938. The first headmaster was Engmann.

Before becoming the Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School, the Odumase campus hosted German missionaries, a primary school, and a government survey school. The “dade” (baobab tree) placed on campus is one of the school’s traditions. “Dade” is a term used to describe a school alumnus. The baobab tree represents knowledge and ingenuity in Ghana.

The new Legon campus, located just north of the University of Ghana’s Mile 9 campus, welcomed its first students in September 1968. It was a boys’ boarding secondary school at the new campus until the mid-1970s, when the sixth form was upgraded to the National Science College. From September 1975, a small number of female students were admitted to the sixth form. They remained a part of the student body until the last group graduated in June 1996.

Uniform Meaning

The uniform the students wear reflects the values of the school.
